To make a stipple ceiling texture, dip an applicator in a drywall compound, adhere it to the ceiling, then draw it away to make a pattern of thorny swirls. It conceals tiny defects and imperfections while casting gloomy shadows and popping every balloon that lands on the ceiling! 

You might not like them, but is that a good enough reason to get rid of them? They're a first cousin to the dreaded popcorn ceilings.
